About the Problem

The business challenge

Pritikin ICR is a leading provider of Intensive Cardiac Rehabilitation in the United States, enhancing healthcare delivery and extending the healthspan of patients through evidence-based lifestyle education. They approached Apzumi with an existing telemedicine platform that needed to be adapted for a new, distinct market segment with different needs and expectations. Apzumi was brought in to evolve the platform, using the existing system as a foundation to build upon, reshaping it to fit an entirely new business model and user context.

The goal was twofold: deliver an MVP quickly enough to validate the idea with real users, and build a system capable of scaling to serve patients both at home and in care facilities, as well as healthcare providers in cardiac units. As the platform was designed to handle sensitive patient data and full HIPAA compliance was a non-negotiable requirement from day one.

Our Solution

What we delivered

The primary objective of the project was to develop Pritikin Connect - a comprehensive, scalable telemedicine platform that translates the client's luxury, brick-and-mortar rehabilitation resort experience into the digital realm. From a patient’s perspective, Pritikin Connect serves as a comprehensive virtual health companion that guides them through their daily recovery and wellness journey. Upon receiving a text or email invitation, patients undergo an initial evaluation that places them on a personalized health pathway tailored to their specific condition, such as recovery from a cardiac incident or oncology treatment.

The core of the patient experience revolves around interactive, live group video sessions. Here, patients not only attend educational meetings on nutrition and lifestyle but also participate in live home workouts in front of their cameras under the direct supervision of a care provider. During these calls, patients complete real-time health surveys, measuring and reporting vitals like pulse and heart rate - data that is further enriched through integration with wearable health devices, giving care providers a more complete picture of each patient's condition. The platform acts as a safety net: if a patient flags that they feel unwell during a session, a doctor can instantly join the call, or the coordinator can immediately dispatch emergency services.

Pritikin Connect is built to accommodate diverse care models: patients can be managed directly by the Pritikin team or remain under the supervision of their own physician, while some providers use the platform exclusively for outcome tracking. To support this flexibility, we designed a robust access management system that handles complex, hybrid user roles - ensuring granular control and full HIPAA compliance.

The platform also integrates with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, enabling seamless synchronisation of patient profiles and clinical data with medical facilities across the United States - a capability not all digital health platforms offer. Today, Pritikin Connect serves over 300 providers nationwide, establishing a scalable new line of digital care services and contributing directly to the client's revenue growth.

Timeline

How it all came together

3 months

MVP Development

We replaced the legacy system by rebuilding the platform from the ground up with a modern multi-portal architecture with AWS authentication and role-based navigation. Aside from delivering the core MVP, we established secure authentication and launched the first live video sessions between patients and providers.

9 months

Software development

We transformed the MVP into a comprehensive clinical tool by developing electronic treatment plans (ITP), referral management, and remote health monitoring with wearable device synchronization. To support high-level medical consultations, we implemented a "classroom" video model featuring bandwidth optimization, screen sharing, and real-time connection quality monitoring.

3 months

iOS deploy and access control

We strengthened the platform’s enterprise-grade security with a granular multi-tenant permission system and upgraded the core to Angular v21 for peak performance. Simultaneously, we completed the iOS deployment and introduced PWA support, ensuring a seamless and reliable experience for mobile users, even in offline environments.

2 months

EHR Integration

We enabled seamless medical data exchange by integrating Redox for nationwide Electronic Health Record (EHR) synchronization in the United States. Additionally, we built automated messaging systems to guide patients through care pathways and introduced a rigorous E2E testing suite to safeguard critical user flows.

2 months

Production Launch & Handover

The final stage focused on polishing the mobile experience and refining the authentication flow with OTP and SSO support. We resolved complex hardware-specific edge cases and conducted a comprehensive stabilization sprint to ensure a high-performance, production-ready release. The project concluded with a meticulous handover, ensuring a seamless transition and full knowledge transfer to the client's internal team.

Technical Overview

The engineering behind the project

Pritkin Connect is a comprehensive telehealth platform built on Angular web portals (Patient, Provider, Admin, and Organization), a Capacitor-based mobile application with iOS and PWA support, and a REST API backend deployed on AWS with Cognito authentication and multi-tenant role management. It integrates with Redox for EHR synchronization, Zoom Video SDK for live video sessions, and Fitbit for remote health monitoring, supporting clinical workflows such as encounter documentation, treatment plans, referral management, and automated patient messaging.

During development, the team identified a critical rendering defect affecting devices from a major hardware supplier and - by collaborating directly with the video technology provider - secured updates to their global libraries, resolving the issue at the source for all affected devices worldwide.
